Anders is a native of Madison, Wisconsin. She was raised and born within Madison, Wisconsin but now lives Los Angeles, is originally from DeForest. In 1993 she completed her graduation from DeForest Area High school in DeForest Wisconsin. She earned her bachelor of fine Arts degree from University of Wisconsin Stevens Point in 1997. She graduated in 2001 and earned the title of Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University. Between 2006 and the year 2015, Anders and her former Joey co-star Matt LeBlanc, who met on set of the sitcom that ended in a rerun, began dating. Sean Anders is her brother.
